The electrorheological valve is an innovation in fluid control by usingelectrorheological technology, which has the advantages of simple configuration andthe pressure drop of the valve can be rapidly and infinitely regulated by continuouslyimposed electric field, otherwise there is no movement parts in the ER valve, the pressloss of the hydraulic system using it is very small and the fluctuation of fluid can benearly neglected. So if it is applied to ABS of automobile, it will greatly improve theresponse speed and get better braking performances. In this paper, an ER valvepressure modulator is designed based on the theory of ABS,and then the responsecharacteristics of it is analyzed, finally the braking performance of ABS system usingER valve is simulated, the main contents are as follows:First of all, a new ABS using ER valve is proposed considering the shortcomingsof traditional pressure modulator of ABS and the superiority of electrorheologicaltechnology in fluid power transmission and control; according to the structure andworking principle of traditional pressure modulator, an ER valve pressure modulatoris designed and the working medium, high voltage power supply, energy device of thenew modulator are analyzed.Secondly, the configuration and geometry size of ER valve is determinedaccording to working principals of ER valve; the ER valve is suitable for ABS devicethrough ANSYS analysis for the strength and stiffness of the valve; the flow field ofthe ER valve are simulated through FLUENT analysis, the results indicate that theflow characteristics are consistent with theoretical analysis. The mathematical modelof the ER valve pressure modulator is then derived and on the basis of it, the stabilityand the response characteristic of the device is simulated using MATLAB software,the results show that the device has good performance on regulating the pressure offluid.Finally, the mathematical model of the whole ABS system using ER valve isestablished according to the vehicle structure and the research purpose of vehiclebraking effect. A sliding mode controller based on characteristics of ABS is designedon basis of the dynamic model and hydraulic braking model of the vehicle. the newABS system is modeled using Simulink software and the brake performancesimulation are carried out, the results show that the designed sliding mode variable structure controller is correct, and the braking time and braking distance of ABS basedon electrorheological valve is shorter than tradition’s, meanwhile, the brake pressureis stable during braking.
