The ER fluid is a kind of new smart materials, it has great potential in the automotivesector, especially in the automotive clutch. Now many vehicle manufacturers have beenconducting research on the ER fluid clutch. The ER fluid clutch has superior characteristicscompared to the traditional friction clutch. The overall performance of the vehicle could begreatly improved with the ER fluid clutch applied to vehicles. Based on the innovationproject of Science and Technology Department of Jilin Province---“Research on theElectrorheological Automatic Clutch for Economic Vehicle”, this paper has researched onthe application of ER fluids in the vehicle clutch. The main contents of this paper are asfollows:Firstly, this paper introduced the ER effect, the mechanism of ER effect and the ERfluid, and then, researched on the influence of the solvent, the deionized water, the droppingrate, the inhibitor, the stirring time and the air blast on the gel time of sol–gel synthesizedchromium-doped titanium dioxide electrorheological material. After that, prepared thesol–gel synthesized chromium-doped titanium dioxide electrorheological fluid with thedoping ratio (Cr/Ti)30%.Secondly, this paper described the characterization parameter of ER fluid mechanicalproperties and influence factors of the ER fluid mechanical properties, and tested themechanical properties of the ER fluid. Then introduced the specific structure of the ER fluidclutch used in this paper, and established the torque model of the ER fluid clutch combinedwith the specific structural parameters of ER fluid clutch.Thirdly, this paper introduced the control requirements of the ER fluid clutch applied toAMT, choosed different control methods for the start-up working condition and the shiftworking condition, and then analyzed the working principle of the ER fluid clutch applied toAMT used in this paper. According to the working principle and engagement requirements ofER fluid clutch applied to AMT, this paper formulated different control strategies for three kinds of start-up working conditions and two kinds of shift working conditions.Finally, analyzed the shearing loss of ER fluid clutch using the model of parallel planegap flow. According to the specific structural parameters of the ER fluid clutch applied toAMT, this paper established the energy wastage model, the heat conduction model andtemperature rise model of the ER fluid clutch applied to AMT. And then, simulated thetemperature characteristics of the ER fluid clutch applied to AMT in different conditions.The simulation results showed that the ER fluid clutch applied to AMT could keeping onslipping with the speed difference equal to or less than1500r/min. Finally, verified thetemperature rise model of the ER fluid clutch applied to AMT by bench test.Compared with the traditional friction clutch, the ER fluid clutch applied to AMT hasmany advantages such as non-abrasion, fast response, good controllability and smoothengagement. This paper has researched on ER fluid mechanical properties, the torque modelof the ER fluid clutch applied to AMT, the control strategy and the temperature risingcharacteristic of the ER fluid clutch applied to AMT, all of these provide a theoreticalreference and experimental guide for researching on the ER fluid clutch.
