In recent years, more and more public attention have been paid to a series of socialproblems, such as the security of pupils on the way home, the choices of staying placesafter school, and the construction of school districts. In order to set up pupils’ safe routesafter school and to create the corresponding urban space which contributes to children’sgrowing up, the study firstly grasped the pupils’ basic situations (need to be picked up ornot, what kind of staying places, forms of transportation and so on) through statisticsfrom questionnaires. Then it made clear of the features of urban space structures in schooldistricts by space syntax theory, and significant places in urban space by field trip.Meanwhile, the traffic conditions of people and vehicles (density, tracks, and distribution oftime series, etc.) in front of school gates when school is over were made a research viafixed-observation, then the characteristics of pupils’ behaviors and routes (moving path, distance, speed, and staying density, etc.) after school were investigated by using handheldGPS. Finally the study discussed the relationship between urban space and pupils’ behaviorcharacteristics after school. Overall, this investigation measured and analyzed pupils’wholeroutes from school to home uninterruptedly through quantitative methods, such as statisticsanalysis of behaviors and actions, space syntax theory and data analysis of GPS. And onthat basis it put forward the scientific and quantitative guidelines on designing of primaryschools’ front gate zones, optimization of pupils’ routes on the way home, planning of theschool districts, and planning and designing of pupils’ activity space.
