At present, the scale and location of the materials stack area on construction site inthe field of the road engineering project are generally developed by empiricalconstruction, which easily causes the unreasonable scale and location of the materialsstack area, leads to the imbalance of the materials supply and demand and the increaseof the materials transport path on construction site, brings about the downtime and theincrease of the materials transport cost, and eventually results in the delay of time limitfor a project and the cost out of control. In order to balance the materials supply anddemand relation and improve the materials transport path and finally better control thetime limit for a project and the cost, it is a burning question of the road industry to usethe scientific and reasonable method to determine the scale and location of the materialsstack area.How to use the scale and location knowledge to determine the scale and location ofthe materials stack area on construction site in the field of the road engineering projectis mainly studied in the paper. Firstly, the literature about the materials stack area onconstruction site in the field of the road engineering project is summarized. On thatbasis, a scale model of the materials stack area is present, which is based on the actualsituation of the road, the materials stock quota and the occupation of land area.Considering the specific circumstance of the materials stack area in two differentconstruction environment——“need for constructing new shortcut” and “no need forconstructing new shortcut”, the first location model and the second location model ofthe materials stack area are proposed, which aim at realizing the minimum total cost ofthe materials transport on construction site. A numerical example which is based on thereal road engineering project is carried out to prove the proposed scale and locationmodels. At the same time, the calculated location results of the two developed locationmethods of the materials stack area in the numerical example is analyzed and compared.The research results show that it is feasible that the proposed scale and location modelsare applied to computing the scale and location of the materials stack area in thepractice of the road, and the computing process and the computing result of the first location model is more scientific and realistic than the second location model in theconstruction condition of the “no need for constructing the shortcut”.
