Steel slag is the main by-product in the process of steel making. It is important to effectively utilize steel slag at home and abroad. Now the amount of utilized steel slag is low, resource utilization of steel slag is far from the reasonable target of bulk volume, low energy consumption and high added value. Comparatively speaking, the utilization of steel slag in construction industry, where the activity or the mechanical properties of steel slag are full using, can be regarded as a higher added value utilization mode when the steel slag is used as the admixture of cement, admixture of concrete, asphalt concrete aggregate or partial substitution of coarse aggregate in concrete. Once the good volume stability steel slag concrete being prepared, the bulk volume, low energy consumption utilization of steel slag achieves, simultaneously the good economic and environmental benefits shows.Focusing on the feasibility of preparing high volume stability concrete with only steel slag as coarse and fine aggregate, the basic performance, volume performance and expansion control measures of steel slag concrete were investigated in this paper. The research findings will benefit the bulk volume, low energy consumption utilization of steel slag in concrete. In order to investigate the effect of steel slag aggregate substitution on the basic mechanical performance and volume deformation of concrete, the fresh concrete workability, strength (compressive and flexural strength), volume deformation (drying shrinkage) and durability(carbonation resistance, impermeability, frost resistance and abrasive resistance) were studied. The design compressive strength is C30and the substitution of steel slag as coarse aggregate are0,30%,60%,100%respectively. Steel slag as coarse and fine aggregate with the substitution rate of100%was also studied. The results show that steel slag aggregate improved the compressive and flexural strength of concrete, and increasing with the substitution rate; the drying shrinkage was significantly increased; the resistance of carbonation, permeability and frost were slightly improved. The expansion of concrete by partially substitution of fine steel slag aggregate with scrap tire particles showed obvious decrease. So the scrap tire particles modified steel slag concrete with satisfactory mechanical strength, shrinkage and early-age plastic cracking performance. The compressive and flexural strength of concrete decreased when use scrap tire particles. The flexibility of using waste tire rubber powder particles to improve the slag concrete volume deformation can be expected to solve the problem of expansion when use bulk volume steel slag in building materials, and will show important practical significance and application value.
