As a foreign subject, environmental art design covers a very wide range from narrowly-defined environment centered on the indoor and outdoor of buildings to the widely-defined people’s life that includes architecture, gardens and scene-oriented artificial environment. When viewed from the source and development trace of environmental art, its development is closely related to the development of human society. In modern China, the Reform and Open-up has provided powerful motivation for country development. However, opening up has put China under the attack of the trend of global integration. The attack of cultural globalization on environmental art is directly reflected by the urbanization process led by western architectural design. A lot of landmarks in cities are designed in western style and only few local buildings are characterized by national and regional features. Fortunately, global integration is not absolute since it has helped to create corresponding localization. The trend of emphasizing difference, diversity and nationalization is enhanced, which is directly reflected by that designs on national culture are attracting more and more attention. Under such circumstance, the issue of how to apply national culture in the field of design by combining localization has become a hot topic. In this paper, practical experience on applying national culture in design is found by listing and making comparisons among examples of applying the architectural elements on environmental art in China and the application of similar architectural elements in Southeast Asia countries while combining theories of environmental art design to make systematic analyses. This paper is aiming at providing China’s modern environmental art design with references and broadening the thinking way of the inheriting method of national culture.
