The housing seismic vulnerability study is a vital foundation for earthquakedisaster reduction and mitigation. Yunnan and Qinghai provinces, which locatedin the North-South seismic belt, are suffering from relatively more frequentseismic activities. Given this fact, the number of houses with seismic resistancedesign grows in these two provinces with the rapid development of the nationaleconomy. However, old houses, folk houses are still a major part of theresidential houses. In this paper, the writer conducts a lot of investigative workabout residential houses according to structure types and derives statistic databased on the numbers and proportions of various types of houses; structuralfeatures, seismic performance of seven categories of major structural types ofhousing (civil structure houses, brick houses, Chuan-dou timber frame structurehouses, not fortified brick houses, fortification brick houses, reinforced concreteframe building, high-rise buildings) are analyzed in-depth; combining the last20years historical earthquakes damage data and research experience of the experts,the damage matrix, vulnerability curves are given which provides a reliablebasis for various types housing damage assessment in these two provinces; onthis basis, comparative study of the seismic performance and the seismicdamage index of seven categories of structural types is analyzed, serving as thefoundation of the development of seismic resistance research. The content ofthis paper is organized as follow:(1)The writer conducted the survey for housing data in16cities inYunnan Province as well as10cities in Qinghai Province. The quantities andproportions of major structure types of housing are calculated, the distributionand structural features are analyzed respectively; the last30years seismicdamage data in these two provinces are gathered so that statistic analysis ofseismic damage matrix could be derived.(2)Based on the historical data of housing damage in the two provinces,combined with the valuable experience of relevant experts, the earthquakedamage matrix was modified to obtain a more scientific and reasonableconclusions. The earthquake vulnerability curves are calculated by programsand the damage degree of different types of housing are predicted as well.(3)Selecting Chuan-dou timber frame structure house as control group,various types of housing are compared by seismic damage index. Therefore, theseismic resistance performances and features are summarized.
