Environmental and energy crisis gave birth to the ecological building which is theinevitable development trend in future. So far, most architects regard their ownresponsibilities as designing strong, practical and beautiful buildings, living morecomplicated questions of indoor comfort to the relevant professionals. Because ofits wide coverage, ecological buildings can’t be qualified for all aspects. But it isclosely related between passive design and architects’ necessary abilities.Based on the problems during the learning process, the author thinks that architecturedesign should be integrated with the healthy building in the whole process instead ofpure form expression. Problems could be solved in the following aspects:1. The classification of the definitions of passive ventilation cooling. Passive designinvolves passive heating and passive cooling. Different thermal partitions in Chinadecide different building types in China to meet different requirements. The authortakes the view that the passive ventilation has a close contact with the naturalventilation, cypress effort effect, venturi principle and night ventilation.2. Research on the PDC(passive downdraught cooling) system. There are limitedstudies on the PDC at present in the worldwide. The author makes a summary andanalyze in this paper according to the origion, the suitable region and the designprinciple.3. The research on the potential application of PDC system on single or low-risedwelling buildings in Tianjin. Based on the case study of sunflower, the zero-energyhouse built by TJU in SDE2010, the application of PDC system is discussed andcalculated through fluid dynamics airpak simulation, being extended to singlelow-rise residential buildings ultimately. Further study will be included in other typesof buildings such as in the public space.Passive ventilation cooling system expresses promising perspective because of thenet-energy consumption and low energy consumption in buildings, which is linked with traditional architectural concepts and design principles. This paper may play avaluable role in providing some references for the further study and design.
