Abstract/Summary:
Recently, with the various deterioration of environment and energy problemssuch as global warming, disappearance of species, deterioration of ecologicalenvironment, energy crisis and so on, human pay more attention to the relationshipbetween nature and themselves, reflect on themselves and try to fight their way in thesustainable developing road. In1972, the idea of sustainable development was firstformally proposed at the United Nations Conference on human environment inStockholm. In1978, the Our Common Future defined the notion of “sustainabledevelopment” as “to meet the needs of contemporary people, without the ability offuture generations to meet their own needs against development”. Afterwards, Chinagovernment approved and promulgated China’s Agenda21--White Paper on China’sPopulation, Environment, and Development in the21st Century, which incorporatesthe sustainable development into the future social and economic development. Therefore, under this background, more and more attention in the architectureprofessions has been concentrated on sustainable architecture and ecologicalarchitecture strategies, basing on the sustainable development concepts and seekingfor economically, socially, culturally sustainable development. This thesis chooses the sustainable housing in subtropical climate zone as theresearch object, analysis the examples from Queensland State, Australia and hope toget the sustainable strategies and guidelines in such climate conditions. Firstly, literature review about sustainable housing design and bioclimatic housing isexamined as well as the guideline reading in similar climatic zone. Secondly, itdescribe and analysis the advantages and disadvantages of subtropical climate andcompares the design strategies in similar bioregional areas. Thirdly, three case studiesfrom Queensland are analyzed in the aspects of construction, design process, economic conditions of the occupants, occupant activities (thermal comfort, material, and neighborhood, recycling) and sustainable sense. In meantime, the comparison ofChinese and Australian houses helps to find the appropriate development methods ofChinese sustainable housing. Fourthly, considering the Chinese context, the papertries to find the proper way of sustainable housing development. Last but not the least,it demonstrates the limitations and future expectation of the research.
