Nowadays, the changes of information itself, as well as its ways to spread, which dueto the development of technology, are challenging the design of library. Meanwhile, these changes also provide a scarce opportunity for exploiting library’s potential ofpublicity and flexibility. This thesis is separated into3main parts to discourse the issue above following theorder of time. And the contents include summary in words (□), description by cases(△), and analysis through diagrams (○), which means the structure of the article canbe illustrated as the following graph:“(□-□-△)-(□-△)-(△-○-□)”.In the preface, we talk about the reason and meaning of the thesis’s topic, the currentsituation and the method of the research. In the first chapter, by tracing the origin oflibrary architecture and its name, as well as disciplines and theories interrelated, author tries to comprehend the role library plays in human civilized society with widerand deeper background. The second chapter goes over the history of library separatedinto two parts by the Printing Revolution before the Information Revolution.Especially emphasizes on the causality between the way information was dealt andarchitecture design techniques during each history stage. And the chapter ends withfinding out the classifications of books as clues leading the development of library. The third chapter elaborates both the root and concrete condition of the crisis oflibrary brought by the Information Revolution. And labels6main problems need to besolved. In the next chapter, author introduces a far-reaching library competition at theend of last century, which had a great influence on the library design theory. In the fifth chapter, author induces several great design techniques for the new eralibrary from huge amounts of examples, which include6different aspects as theanswer to the6problems mentioned before, from which, we conclude the new theoryin the new century for library design. After all the horizontal summaries above oflibrary design in different times, in the fifth chapter, author compares the differencesbefore and after the revolution vertically. And according to it, we are able to predictthe development trends as well as design principles for the future library.
