Metal faced sandwich panel is a composite structure in which the outer and innerfaces are all formed from thin metal sheets and the middle core is a relatively muchlower stiffening and density material, such as plastic foams or inorganic fiber material, ifthe core is phenonic foam cores, it is called phenonic-metal faced sandwich panel orphenonic panel. Because the phenonic panel is composed by two materials, it has manygood advantages, for example: fire resistance, insulation, lightweiht. The paper mainly pays attention to the failure modes which the phenolic paneloften occures in the practical project, combines the three methods which areexperiement, theory and finite element to research it, which are for the purpose toprovide an reference of the design and the foundation of the technical specification ofsandwich panels design. The main contents are as follow:(1) By the experiment, the mechanical behaviors of the phenolic foam core isobtained to give the datas for the theoretical and finite element analysis. The failuremode for crushing of the phenolic core at a support is analysised by taking into accoutthe compressive stress distribution of which the dispersive angle is determinedexperimetally. By the full scale-vacuum test, the important data and phenomenon aregot, such as the failure modes, the load-deflection curves, the wrinkling and bucklingloads, etc.(2) By the theorietical research, the reason of the failure mode for crushing of thecore at a support and the failure load are obtianed. The internal force and the deflectioncalculation formula are deduced of the single span panels and continous multi-spanpanels under a uniformly distribute and temperature load on the basis of divided thephenonic panels into wall panels, roof panels and assumed the stiffness of the panels.(3) By borrowing the calculation formulas for the wrinkling stress of the wallpanels and the local buckling stress of the roof panels recommendations for sandwichpanels, the final failure load of the wall panels and roof panels are deduced by based onthe stress-load calculation formulas derived in this paper.(4) By the finite element analysis, the deflection for single span and continuousmulti-span panels of serviceability limit state under a uniformly distributed load or atemperature difference load. The two main methods for improving the bearing capacityof the phenolic panels in practical engineering are discussed, which the finite elementanalysis and theory all show the same that the ways to improving the bearing capacity isdifferent for the wall panels and roof panels.(5) Verified by the experiment, finite element analysis, the calculation formuladeduced can be used as an reference for practical phenonic panels design and provide an important foundation of the technical specification of sandwich panels design.
