As a new type of kinetic energy weapon, the railgun is paid attention by militaryexperts all countries. Howerver,the pulse power supply is huge, which is the importantfactor to restrict the railgun’ land-based actual combat.The compensation pulsealternator(CPA), duo to high power density and high energy density, is consider as theone of the most potential combat power. In order to test the load ability of the CPA on thetheory and experiment, this paper focus on modeling of the CPA powered railgun systemand simulation of the railgun’ load characteristics.First,the work principle and operation characteristics and the energy conversionprocess are made a detailed analysis theoretically.On the basis of theoretical analysis,the railgun is equivalent for a resistor in seriesof a inductor, which are all the nonlinear function of the rails’ current. The mathematicmodel of the system is constructed based on the system equivalent circuit and kinematicequations. The railgun Simulink model is built in which the friction resistance andablation resistance and air resistanc are taken into consideration and the simulation dataand experiment data are identical with each other. The co-simulation model of CPApowered railgun system is realized The co-simulation between the motor finite elementmodel and the railgun circuit model is realized by use of Simplorer.The design method of the core component in railgun is given. The2D finite elementmodel is establish and the inductance gradient is solved by the bus impendance eddycurrent analysis method. Considering the influences of the armature and the length of therails, a method combining the numerical calculation with3D finite element is present tocalulate the inductance gradient at different positions of the rails.At last, limited by costs and lab conditions, we hope to build a power plant tosimulate actual railgun characteristics. To achieve our aims, this article presentes thevoltage-type PWM rectifier circuit, and has verifed the feasibility by MATLABsimulation. Device for main circuit topology has been also selected and designed. Finally,hardware and software design for drive and control circuit is finished, and experimentaltest has put into practice.
