Currently, acrylamide-based water-soluble polymer, which synthesized byacrylamide as monomer is one of the more research、widely used、huge amount ofproduction polymer. Not only on the level of academic, but also on the level ofindustrial production, the traditional free radical polymerization is the most widelymethod to research PAM. But as its large residual monomer、poor molecular weightcontrol、poor polymer structure control and many other shortcomings, the traditionalfree radical polymerization can not meet people’s growing demand foracrylamide-based polymer. So finding a new method which has small residualmonomer、good molecular weight and molecular weight distribution control、goodpolymer structure control and broad industrialization prospect is inevitable. SingleElectron Transfer-Living Radical Polymerization (SET-LRP), because of its key crackneed low energy to produce free radicals. The polymerization reaction can beconducted at a low temperature. Compared with other polymerization methods,SET-LRP needs less polymerization time、lower production cost、good molecularweight and molecular weight distribution control、good polymer structure control andmany other advantages which other polymerization can not meet. So SET-LRPbecomes a dazzling star in the field of polymer synthesis and receives more and moreattention and research.The paper introduced the domestic and international research progress、industrialdevelopment situation、all kinds of polymerization methods and comparison ofadvantages and shortcomings of polyacrylamide. Detailing the principle of SET-LRP、the domestic and international researchers’ contents and developments、the advantagescompared with other polymerization methods and the research situation of thesynthesis of acrylamide-based polymer by SET-LRP, the detail contents were asfollows:1、The homopolymers and copolumers of acrylamide was synthesized bySET-LRP. Acrylamide was initiatied by alpha-Bromoisobutyric acid methyl ester. Elemental copper (Cu) was the catalyst, N, N, N‘, N‘,N‘‘-pentamethyldiethylene triamine was the ligand, water was the solution.2、The effects of dosage of catalyst, ligand types, dosage of ligands, the type ofsolvent, reaction time、reaction temperature and so on on the acrylamide-basedpolymer were discussed.3、Infrared spectrum(FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance(1H-NMR)wereused to analyze and characterize the structure of the product. Gel permeationchromatography (GPC) was used to characterize the molecular weight and molecularweight distribution of acrylamide-based polymer. The results showed that theacrylamide-based polymer was successfully synthesized. The difference betweentheoretical calculated and practical calculated was very small and the molecularweight distribution was very narrow. It indicated that the synthesis ofacrylamide-based polymer by SET-LRP had very good controllability.4、The star polymer of acrylamide was synthesized by SET-LRP. Acrylamide wasinitiatied by CHCl3and CCl4. Elemental copper (Cu) was the catalyst, N, N, N‘, N‘,N‘‘-pentamethyldiethylene triamine was the ligand, dimethyl sulfoxide was thesolution.
