Coatings wear resistance was an important applicaion in the industrial production. The wear resistance of the coatings was affected by the hardness,toughness and the film/substrate adhesion significantly. In this paper, Ti-Si-C-N coating, diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings with and without SiC/DLC interlayer were selected to investigate the relationship between the hardness, elastic-plastic deformation ability, surface toughness, film/substrate adhesion and wear resistance.The composition and structure of the Ti-Si-C-N coating, diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings with and without SiC/DLC interlayer had been analyzed by EDX, SEM, XRD and Raman spectrum. The hardness, elastic-plastic deformation ability, surface toughness, film/substrate adhesion and wear resistance had been evaluated.The relationship between wear resistance and other mechanical properties of the two kinds of coatings had been investigated in the experiment. The results showed that Ti-Si-C-N coating consisted of TiC and TiN phase. Compared with DLC coating, Ti-Si-C-N coating had higher hardness, stronger plastic deformation ability, lower toughness, higher film/substrate adhesion and lower wear resistance. High Hertz stress generated during friction-wear test, strong plastic deformation ability and low toughness were the leading causes of poor wear resistance. Compared with Ti-Si-C-N coatings, DLC coatings had higher toughness, higher elastic recovery ability and lower Hertz stress, leading to better wear resistance.The effect of interlayer on the mechanical properties of DLC coating had been investigated,and the relationship between the coating wear resistance and other mechanical properties had been researched in the experiment. The results showed that the top DLC layer on the two kinds of samples had the same stucture; the hardness, toughness and film/substrate adhesion of DLC coating with SiC/DLC interlayer were enhanced by the introduction of SiC/DLC interlayer, and the plastic deformation ability of DLC coating with SiC/DLC interlayer was reduced by the introduction of SiC/DLC interlayer. The wear resistance of the DLC coatings with SiC/DLC interlayer was significantly improved by the improvement of coating hardness, toughness and adhesion.
