With the rapid development of China’s manufacturing and machinery processing industry, the demand of the performance and quality of bi-metal band saw blades has become increasingly higher and higher, while the heat treatment process determines the final micro structure and mechanical properties of bi-metal band saw blades.Study of the relationship between the heat treatment and micro structure and properties of bi-metal band saw blades tooth backing system, establish a heat treatment database, have an indispensable reference value not only for developing the heat treatment process, but also the manufacturing of the production equipment, the selection of thermal cycling components, the tooling set of assembly line. The paper selects the teeth material high speed and ultra high strength steel M42and back materials high strength steel D6A extensive used by a bi-metal band saw blade manufacturer for the study, conduct a series of quenching, tempering experimental studies to explore the best heat treatment process.Using the Digital Vickers hardness tester HXD1000T, MM-6Horizontal metallurgical instrument, FEI QUANTA200ESEM to test the microstructure and properties of heat-treated samples, and then the following conclusions were obtained after analyzing:(1) Explore the influence of quenching and tempering process on the microstructure and mechanical properties of high speed steel M42, the suitable quenching process for high speed steel M42was1200℃×1Omin, the best way to quench is oil colling and liquid nitrogen, the suitable tempering process was540℃×60min×3times;(2) During the quenching process, using the oil-cooling and liquid nitrogen as the deep cryogenic can significantly refine martensite, and can more effectively improve the hardness of M42high speed steel compared with the air-cooled, high-pressure air cooling.(3) The optimum quenching temperature of D6A is1000-1100℃, the holding time is not more than1min. The best tempering temperature is380℃;(4) During the heat treatment process of the bi-metal band saw blade, the quenching temperature should be as low as possible, the quenching holding time should be shorten, and the tempering temperature should be reduced to reduce the adverse effects of high temperature quenching and tempering on the mechanical properties of back material high strength steels D6A under the premise of ensuring the teeth materials M42to meet the performance requirements.
