In this paper, the application of diatomaceous earth to deodorant paper is mainlydiscussed.Deodorant Paper is the new comer of multifunctional paper in recent years. The methodis to add the deodorant into paper, through spreading or appending into pulp. The effluviumcan be absorbed on account of the physical or chemical property of the deodorizer itself.Basing on the current study, the method of determining the adsorption capacity of deodorantpaper has not been established yet. In this article,a simple technic is presented, which candetermine the deodorization capacity effectively.A technique of detecting the adsorption capacity of deodorant paper is presented in thispaper. Before carrying the experiment, a simple airproof equipment was designed, and a sheetof deodorized paper which was puckered to V model was put into the bottom of it. Somevolume of effluvium was injected and the concentration of it was detected immediately, Afterdifferent time distance the remanent concentration of effluvium was detected again in order tocalculate the concentration absorbed by deodorant paper. Ammonia gas and sulfuretedhydrogen are used as the effluviums. The method for detecting ammonia gas refers to thenational standard GB/T14668-93. Sulfureted hydrogen is determined throughspectrophotometric determination by methylene blue. The volume of the airproof equipment was4L, the range of effluvium volume injectedshould be400-800ml. The concentration of ammonia gas was around0.200~0.400mg/m3and sulfureted hydrogen was around0.070~0.080mg/m3.When the ratio of diatomaceousearth used to fibre used was0.796, deodorant paper had the optimal adsorption effect.Different fibres used also affected the result, chemical pulps were better than mechanicalpulps. The higher the pulp beating degree was,the lower absorbance the deodorized paper had.Through analyzing the difference of4different standard diatomaceous earth that wereRS-300#,RS-400#,TS-20#and RS-700#used, the adsorption capacity of them are nearly thesame. The absorption capacity of papers through sizing methods declined obviously, whilethe paper through surface sizing declined more. After regeneration, the adsorption capacity of deodorant paper did not show much difference.
