Synthetic polymeric materials are widely applied in various fields with the rapid development of the economy. However the applications in production and living has been seriously limited due to its flammability. Therefore fire retardant of polymeric materials has been attracted more attention in material field at present. More and more research and development is made.Intumescent flame retardant (IFR) is the environment-friendly composite flame retardant with coordinated effect of phosphorus and nitrogen. It has been developed in recent years and halogen-free, low smoke, low toxic and preventing drops of solvent are its advantages. But problems with intuition can not be avoided at the same time. Research of flame retardant contain acid source, carbon source and the source has become the trend of the development of the intumescent flame retardant and the flame retardant should have high thermal stability and polarity polymer matrix similarity compatibility.A novel halogen-free intumescent flame retardant, double hydroxyl phosphate melamine octomolybdate (BTOCPMOM) was synthesized in this paper.The materials are pentaerythritol, phosphorus oxychloride, melamine and ammonium heptamolybdate. BTOCPMOM was formulated with pentaerythritol phosphate and melamine octomolybdate through multicoponent complex formulation. Secondly the suitable synthesis conditions were found as follows:reaction time was6h, reaction temperature was100℃, and molar ratio of BTOCCP/MOM was1.0to1.1. Molecular structure of BTOCPMOM was identified by FTIR and elemental analysis. Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and flame retardant performance test showed that the synthetic products showed good thermal stability and eximious char-forming feature in thermal-gravimetric analysis. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) value could reach35.2%, and the flame retardancy was UL-94V-0when the mass fraction of BTOCPMOM flame retardant in PP resin was BTOCPMOM/PP= 30/70(W/W). Finally BTOCPMOM was compared with similar fire retardants PPMS, BAPP and BSPP. Results show that the BTOCPMOM has higher thermal stability and flame retardancy.
