Clothes are the epitome of times and the materialization of national culture. In QingDynasty, Chinese traditional Hanfu was missing for four hundred years; the Tang Dynasty,which was at its zenith of feudal dynasties in China, held an inclusive attitude towardsdifferent cultures, and brilliant achievements in Chinese clothing history were achieved atthat time, when women clothes were a major carrier of social fashion. The Tang Dynasty canbe divided into early, prosperous, middle and late four periods according to its developmentalfeatures. Women clothes can be divided into two main categories, that is, court costumes andcasual wears. Casual clothes gained popularity among women in the Tang Dynasty and alsowere richest in styles and design. Women clothes at four periods of Tang Dynasty differ fromeach other with distinct change. At the onset of early Tang Dynasty, women clothes were fine,simple but elegant, and then shawl collar, skirt with pieces together, turn-down collar andstriped pants were typical characteristics of clothes at the later period of early Tang Dynasty.Women clothes at the prosperous Tang Dynasty were luxurious and elegant, and skirt lengthinched up gradually; and when it turned to middle and late Tang Dynasty, women clotheswere decorous, convergent and with wide sleeves. The development of clothes had greatlyrelated to its society politics, economy and culture.The research conducts collections, statistics and analysis for design, collocation, shellfabric and color design for ruqun and similar men suits designed for women, which are themost common casual clothes in Tang Dynasty, and explores the internal factors for changing.The paper utilizes diagrams to provide an intuitive feeling for the change and development ofwomen clothes design in the Tang Dynasty, and hopes to afford lessons for the revival oftraditional clothes and its application in modern women clothes.
