As a main mode of measuringing sustainable development of human society,ecological footprint has been generally accepted and practised by more and morecountries and regions in the world. In the paper,according to the physical truth,theecological footprint model of Xining City is analyzed on the base of the study aboutemergy analysis. Compared with traditional ecology footprint method,emergyanalysis synthetically takes about the material stream and different energy stream asthe references,then apply the emergy ratio to calculating and analyzing thesestream,eventually,convert these energy and material stream to correspondingorganism productive ground area to measure the sustainability of system exactly.It isnot only measuring the devotion of human but also emphasizing the contribution ofnature.Therefore,this method blazes a new channel of harmonious developmentbetween human and nature.At first,based on the summing-up of emergy research,the ecological footprintmodel of Xining City is analyzed. The results show that:(1)The ecologicalfootprint,ecological deficit and ecological overloading index from2001to2011showe a trend of increase year by year, regional economic development of Xining isin an unsustainable state.(2)The development of economy in Xining City mainlydepends on the nonrenewable resources, which is a unreasonable resource structure.(3) The comprehensive use ratio on agriculture resource of Xining city is toolow,which lacks of industrialization and intension operation.(4) The fast increaseof population in Xining city results in a big load bearing on agriculture and city.(5)The industry systeam of Xining have developed effectively in recent years,whichmainly rely on the electricity and coal resource.The ecological overloading ratiogoes up constantly which has exceeded the threshold,so the systeam structure andfunction should be adjusted as soon as possible.Based on emergy analysis,this paper gives some suggestions about thesustainable development of Xining City:(1) Control the population effectively, rationally and properly exploit the other organisms resources in the area,especially thenonrenewable resources.(2) Strengthening the returning farmland to forests orgrassland,promote construction of the ecology protect.(3) Changing the increasemodel of economy and regulating structure of industy are to promote thetransformation of structure of industy,develop the resource-saving industry.(4)Improve the ecological environment to ease the envoronmental load bearing andincreas the level of utilization of resources.(5)Establish the laws and regulations onecological protect and repair.Finally,there is the conclusion, is divided into the following points:(1)Theecological footprint,ecological deficit and ecological overloading index increase byyears,the reginal economic development is in a unsustainable state.(2) Thenonrenewable resources take the loading role of80%,the resource structure isunreasonable(.3) Comprehensive utilization of agricultural resources in Xining cityis low, the mode of operation is relatively backward.(4) In Xining,the populationand the urbanization process grow continually in recent years,which leads to therising ecological footprint and highlighted ecological problems.(5) In recent10years in Xining,the impact on invironment haves exceeded threshold of ecologicalcarrying capacity,system structure and function have to be adjusted.Innovation points:(1)The paper have combined the method of emergy andecological footprint together to analyze dynamically the sustainable development forcity.(2)To evalute the the sustainable development of city is the decision basis forfurther and better development.Deficiencies of the paper:(1)The inadequacy on constructing the emergyaccount of ecological footprint may lead to some tiny error with the truth situation.(2)Because of the limitation of data information,some small resourses item cannotbe added to the system which may lead to a smaller ecological footprint.(3)Theemergy conversion rate have be applied to resources and products,ignoring theheterogrnrity of different area.(4)Due to the model of ecological footprint based onemergy analysis is on a fledging perion now,so there are still some problems need tobe dealed with in a mature research afterward.
