The assembly process planning is a key part in the product development process. The assembly process often constitutes most of the cost of the product. Therefore, it is crucial to develop appropriate assembly planning early in the design phase. The continuous development of computer technology in recent years, especially the breakthrough development in computer graphics technology provides a new development direction for assembly planning and design. The introduction of virtual reality technology in the field of assembly planning and design, virtual assembly is of great significance in the design certification, parts assembly inspection and assembly process planning with intuitive human-computer interaction. This paper make in-depth analysis of several hot issues such as positioning of parts and assembly process control in the field of virtual assembly and try to use the virtual assembly in network augmented reality environment to build a basic application platform and provide the oretical and technical support for the follow-up study. The main contents of this paper are:1. The ontology buildingThe object of this paper is virtual assembly process. Therefore, we need to analyze and express knowledge in the field at first. Combined with the characteristics of this field, it can be summed up in two categories-"object description" and "machine identification. This paper constructs mechanical assembly structure ontology, which learns from the mechanical function structure ontology (MFSO) construction method, to describe the entire mechanical assembly process involves knowledge. Then convert it to the Computer Recognition language to be stored through the framework of the notation+XML.2. Feature-based assembly situational awarenessThis paper design the feature-based scene perception mechanism based on the basic idea of the framework theory. Through the operation of the user’s guide, we can perceive user assembly intentions. Then capture the current scene and match with typical assembly scenarios which have been stored in the computer, combined with mechanical assembly structure ontology. Finally complete the assembly automatically.3. The network augmented reality technologyThis paper use augmented reality environment in the virtual assembly process and improve the existing augmented reality development tools ARToolKit by a combination of mechanical assembly characteristics in the registration mode and the data processing mode, etc. Also this paper propose solutions on the actual situation of registered and occlusion problems. At the same time, in order to increase system openness, we introduce the network transmission technology to realize remote collaboration.Finally, a prototype system, named FARNA, of augmented reality network assembly, based on features was design and developed. By this system, the research, method and mechanism in thesis were validated. Experiments show that the feature-based assembly situational awareness can obtain response of user interaction intentions accurately and sensitivity; Images display clear and synchronization; The system run smoothly and stability with natural interaction and rapid response.
