In impact crusher, the rocks in the cavity have no any constrain or it is free beforeand after impacted by bar and plate. The impact crushing theory for free rock is few sofar, and the design of impact crusher has little theoretical base. So the engineering levelof impact crusher and the ability of self-dependent innovation on impact crusher aremuch restricted. In this paper, the impact crushing of single rock in the cavity wasinvestigated with finite element simulation.First, the impact crusher was modeled, and the impact forces act on rock from barand plate and the influence factors were investigated with FE simulated. The influencefactors include rock shape, impact position on rock, distance from bar and plate, tiltangle of plate, and bar wear, etc. Using the rock constitutive model of Cowper-Symonds,it is investigated that the influence of rock’s erosion to impact force.According to fracture mechanics, a rock with one initial fracture was modeled, andit was impacted by the bar. The stress intensity factor KI,KII,KIIIin the fracture tip andthe stress in the rock was investigated with simulation. The results will give an basis forthe study of fragmentation mechanism of free rock. Finally, a rock model can simulate the process of crushing was established, and ifthe stress exceed the limit value, it will be broken to several parts. In simulation, therock is broken form2to8parts, and the envelope curves of fragments’ trajectory wereobtained. The results will provide a basis for cavity design.
