Water inflow is one of the major coal mine disasters. With the increasing extent and depth of coal mining, the possibility of water inflow is increasing. Water inrush accidents directly endanger the safety of mining workers and state property, hampering the normal mining activities. The use of the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater in the major aquifers to correctly and quickly discriminate the water-inrush sources is essential for the normal operation of mines.Water samples were collected in Panxie mining area and their conventional ion contents were measured. Varous methods, including ions composition analysis, hydrochemical types, mathermatical statistical analysis and ion sources identification, were used to explore the compositional difference in conventional ions between different aquifers and coal mines, and to obtain the variation patterns of hydrochemical characteristics. To discuss the water-rock interaction mechanism, limestone samples were collected from floor of Group A coal of the carboniferous Taiyuan formation in Xieqiao coal mine. The microscopic analysis, XRD diffraction and X-ray fluorescence analysis of the limestone samples, combined with ion content of groundwater in corresponding aquifer, explained the relation between the mineral composition, chemical composition and the ion content. On the basis of above hydrochemical analysis, model of identifying the water-bursting sources was established using Bays method. In combination with the analysis of trace elements, the mixed water calculation model was further set up. These models can distinguish sources of part of water samples. It should be combined with trace elements, isotope for high precision judged. The calculation process of mixed water model is simple, and can effectively determine the mixing degrees.
