The term biocular refers to an optical system in which the optical components are shared by both of the viewer’s eyes. With the development of image display devices and the improvement of optical manufacturing technology, visual system has been widely used in the field of medicine industry, entertainment, military, and so on. It’s great important for the visual systems to have good optical performance which mean being compact, comfort, and more expansibility. Therefore, at the premise of ensuring optical performance, using a reasonable optical structure is a very significant design requirement. This article discusses three aspects of visual systems, which are the human eye’s physiological structure and its optical properties, traditional eyepiece structure characteristics and optical properties and the characteristics of diffractive optical element. According to the application requirements, the technical specifications of the Biocular visual optical system were presented. By the reasonable selection of the optical system in the initial structure and optimization design, designed a Biocular eyepiece with exit pupil diameter of70mm, eye pupil diameter of5mm, effective focal length of50mm, eye relief distance of25mm,0.486-0.656mm is wavelength band and diffractive optical element, And the system had MTF is higher than0.1at the frequency of361p/mm and the distortion is less than4%by the use of the diffractive optical element. Image quality evaluation shows that, the using of diffractive optical element not only obvisously corrects the location chromatic aberration and lateral chromatic aberration, but also reduces the number of lenses, lightens the volume and the weight of the optical system.
