| Cognizing and responding to disasters well is the effective way to reduce disaster losses. The research about the cognition on and respond to disaster have been concerned widely at home and abroad. Earthquake is one of the most destructive natural disasters in the world. The elementary school students is the most vulnerable group in our society and more likely to be damaged when disasters strike, analysis of the elementary school students cognizing and responding to the earthquake disaster is very meaningful. By taking magnitude7.1earthquake occurred in Yushu area, Qinghai Province on April14th,2010as the case disaster event, the Present situation of elementary school students cognizing and responding to earthquake disaster in Yushu area was analyzed preliminarily through questionnaire survey method According to the analysis results, some suggestions and strategy for improving the ability of elementary school students cognizing and responding to earthquake disaster, The main conclusions are as follows:1. The total level on cognizing and responding to earthquake disaster of the elementary school student in Yushu area is poor,The score rates of pupils are low in the variables of earthquake disaster knowledgeã€disaster-releasing skiilsã€self-mutual rescuingã€emotion and rumor. The elementary school students on emotion and information variable have highest scores rate (0.52), the elementary school student’s ability of mastering skills of earthquake disaster reduction is the weakest(0.29). All of these data prove strongly that it is very important to intensify ceaselessly the earthquake disaster education in that area.2. Features of elementary students cognizing to the earthquake disaster:The knowing rates of each specific attention-required items during the earthquake emergency is all low. The vast majority of them can’t identify earthquake rumors and susceptible to the influence of earthquake rumors. The desire of most elementary school students to master more knowledge and disaster-reduction of the earthquake has increased after the earthquake disaster.3. Features of elementary students responding to the earthquake disaster:Although most of the elementary school students didn’t take measures of emergency evacuation, it is certain that the majority of them have the willingness to help and rescue others. After the earthquake, the elementary school student appeared different degree of fear, panic, sorrow and other bad mood. The further study show that family members and relatives play most important role in comforting the mood of the elementary school student, followed by religious people, teachers and schoolmates. The earthquake caused strong impact on mental status of the elementary school student, but, More than half of pupils are full of confidence for future life and learning.4. According survey results, the impact of gender factor is poor for the level of the elementary school student cognizing and responding to earthquake disaster in Yushu area, the elementary school student’s the score rates of all the cognition and response variable in the urban school are higher than the pupil’s in the rural school. Religious factors have certain degree of influence on ability of the elementary school student cognizing and responding to earthquake disaster. The distinction of the level between disasters grade districts is significant, but the reason of which remain to be explored.5. Further analysis of the results showed, the experience with disaster events school contingency plans and emergency exercises have a positive influence on the integrative level of elementary school students cognizing and responding to earthquake disaster. The influences of disaster-releasing skill in the response of the earthquake are more significant than the influences of earthquake disaster knowledge. The cognition degree of local pupil has a deep impact on the actual response in the earthquake.6. The main ways of getting the knowledge and disaster-reduction of the earthquake are classroom education and specialized publicity from school. The role of religious figures, government and popular science books in publicity and education of the knowledge and disaster-reduction of the earthquake has no significant difference, which are also the important information sources of earthquake knowledge for most pupils. However, the effects of radio, television, newspapers, mobile phones and the Internet on publicity of earthquake knowledge are very limited.Based on the analysis above, five advices was put forward for enhancing ability of the elementary school student cognizing and responding to earthquake disaster. The advices are as follows:(1) Booster the propaganda on earthquake disaster, impart life-saving or rescue techniques which are operable for the elementary school students.(2) Attaching importance to rural security education, utilize properly role of religious people at disaster prevention and mitigation.(3) Formulate emergency preplan of earthquake and other sudden major disasters, organize emergency exercises regularly.(4) it is more necessary to strengthen the publicity of earthquake knowledge by reinforcing the school education and playing the roles of the government. |
