The South Yellow Sea (SYS) and the East China Sea (ECS) are marginal seasof Pacific Western, which possess broad shelf and complex hydrology condition. What’s more, The SYS and ECS receive a large number of terrestrial matters. TheJiaozhou Bay is a typical semi-enclosed bay of SYS, which is exerted a tremendousinfluence by agriculture and industry. In summer, marine biological activity is morestrong, rainfall and runoff is also high, the source of metal elements in suspendedparticulate matters (SPM) which contain terrestrial input, biological activity andother factors can be understood by analysing of content and distribution SPM and itschemical composition in seawater. This paper studies content and distribution of SPM and their elementcomposition which were determined by ICP-AES from the SYS and ECS in thesurface and the bottom seawater in July2006and from the Jiaozhou Bay in July2008. SPM contents and their element composition from two transect in this studywere compared with those collected and determined in spring and autumn. Conclusions are summarized as follows:The content of SPM in the surface seawater in the SYS and ECS in summerranged from0.1to148.9mg/L and averaged to8.1mg/L. The content of SPM in thebottom seawater in the SYS and ECS in summer ranged from0.4to94.4mg/L andaveraged to14.3mg/L. The content of SPM in the surface and bottom seawater inthe SYS and ECS in summer were divided into three parts, the first part was the SYS,the second part was the surrounding waters of the Yangtze Estuary and Cheju Islandand the last part was the East China Sea, in which the highest value was in thesecond part. Most element content in the SPM is in accordance tendency withcontent of SPM. The highest element content value was located at0501station of the Yangtze Estuary in the surface seawater, the lowest element content value waslocated at0403station of the Yangtze Estuary in the bottom seawater. Fe, Mg, Ba,Ni, Co and V were mainly influenced by terrestrial input, Ca was mainly influencedby biological production, but both had certain influence on the distribution of Cr.The results of enrichment factor (EF) calculation showed that the mean EF values ofPb, Zn, Cu are large, EF values of metal elements in the surface seawater werehigher than those in the bottom seawater. The contents of SPM and their chemical composition reduced from the insideto the outside of the Jiaozhou bay. Al, Fe, Mg, Co, Cu and Pb showed the lowestvalue in D5station, which was associated with particle size. The highest EF valuewas Pb among calculate results of elements EF in the surface seawater in theJiaozhou Bay in July2006, EF value of Mn, P and Zn were much lower than Pb.By comparing the surface seawater of the Jiaozhou Bay in2008and SYS in2006in summer, the content of SPM and their chemical composition in the baymouth was similar with the latter, but the content of SPM and its chemicalcomposition in northwest area of the Jiaozhou Bay was about10times that of thelatter. Additionally, EF value of Pb, Cu, and Zn were larger in the surface seawater inthe Jiaozhou Bay and SYS.The distribution of contents of SPM and their chemical composition in the03transect of SYS were as follows: spring> autumn> summer in the surface seawater, summer> spring≈autumn in the bottom seawater. The distribution of contents ofSPM and their chemical composition in the10transect of ECS were as follows:autumn> spring> summer in the surface seawater, spring≈autumn> summer in thebottom seawater.
