Based on three phases of TM images acquired in2000,2004and2008, guided by landscape ecology theory in virtue of combining technology of Remote Sensing with GIS, with the help of the software of Erdas, Arcgis, Fragstats and Matlab as well as8landscape pattern indexes and Markov Forecast Model in the scale of both types and landscape, the author took Taiyuan City in Shanxi province (including6municipal districts,1city and3counties) as a case study to analyze spatial change of land use landscape and corresponding effects on environmental issues, trying to help local authorities better understand a complex land use system and develop improved land use management strategies that could better balance urban expansion and ecological conservation. The results of this study showed that:1, The area of grassland and forestland had a large proportion, about50%of the total area of Taiyuan. Building land, green area, river dredging, intended increased river and so on took up a lot of grass area, resulting in a significant reduction of the grassland area, at the same time, the number of patches and the degree of fragmentation increased.2, During the eight years, water area had increased by1370.15hectares, which is closely related to human disturbance. The increasing human intervention factors caused a larger number of patches of water and the degree of increases fragmentation. The boundary complexity of the water land use type had raised.3, The area of building land had a steady growth of1516.64hectares every four years on average from2000to2008. The number of patches decreased. The characteristics of the urban construction in Taiyuan city appeared to be more planned, and the building land boundary and structural characteristics tended to be simplified.4, From2000to2004, under the influence of returning the grain plots to forestry policy, the area of farmland in Taiyuan showed a decreasing trend, the reduced farmland area conversed to forest and grassland. The degree of fragmentation reduced as the number of patches decreased. From2004to2008, farmland area showed a rebounding trend, and there were some further adjustments to the policy of returning the grain plots to forestry, which caused the total amount of farmland had a steady growth of small amplitude.5, Most of the unused land conversed into grassland and forestland, while a small part was occupied by urban construction and supplementary farmland. From2000to2008, there were6014.9hectares unused land which were reclaimed and utilized. The completing of the Fenhe Park in2000made a contribution to Taiyuan eco-green building.6, During the eight years of the study period, the increase and extent of the forestland area in Taiyuan are more significant, the increased areas are27,355.32hectares. Forestland converting from farmland, grassland in the ecological construction process and urban greening as well contributed to the rapid growth of forestland.7, As landscape heterogeneity dropped in Taiyuan from2000to2004, landscape type had a developing tendency towards simplification or non-equalizing direction, which directly reflected that built-up land and public land were increased, farmland was massively reduced. Anti-jamming ability of landscape and stability of entire ecosystem were reduced. However, landscape anti-interference ability and stability of the ecosystem from2004to2008have improved by a certain degree.8, Based on the development trend of the changing condition of land use from2012to2032, simulation and prediction results showed that:There would be a steady increase in forestland area in the next20years, water area would also be growing as planned by human factors; on the base of maintaining the building land area, the farmland would have a steady growth; the grassland area would gradually reduce, mainly converting to forestland and building land; unused land would be gradually occupied by other land use types. Finally the conversion of all types of land use would gradually tend to stabilize.
