Land use structure characteristics has played a certain role in not only the social, economic development and environmental governance but also in promoting social harmony and progress. Due to the influence of topography, climate, hydrology, socio-economic conditions as well as national habits and other factors, land use structure of southwest hills and mountains in the quantity structure and spatial layout has distinctive. The region with complex terrain, hilly, serious soil erosion and ecological environment is fragile; agriculture is basically dominated by crop farming, and land use structure crisscross by forestry and staggered; the level of economic development is relatively low, and the contradiction is very sharp between people and land. Therefore, to strengthen the study of land use structure characteristics of the southwest hills and mountains especially the county scale land use structure characteristics have important practical significance. In this study, the purpose of this research was to quantitatively analyze land use characteristics at county scale by selecting related quantitative indices combined with GIS technology, for understanding both quantitative and spatial structure of land ues. The quantitative analysis was carried out by using the cadastre data in2009and the land use map of1:10000scales in2009in Yongchuan district, Chongqing city. The results showed that:①The overall level of land use diversification of Yongchuan district was on the middle level, but was obvious differences. The centralized index was smaller, and vice versa, the diversity index was biger. Moreover, the whole function of the type of land use was weak, because it was mainly influenced by the township’s natural environment and topography and its regional socio-economic conditions and other factors. Location significance was prominent in most villages and towns, because it was an important grain-producing area. Woodland location significance was important in chashanzhuhai street, which was closely related to the topography and other natural factors. Due to the differences of the township of socio-economic factors as well as natural environmental conditions, location significance of the other sites in the township had different levels of expression.②The analysis of land use types plaque morphological characteristics showed that the cultivated land and urban village and industrial land were land landscape matrix of Yongchuan district. The analysis of land use of economic spatial structure showed that the higher area of land use ecological only distributed in individual towns.③he factors analysis of land use structure indicated that natural prerequisite of formed land use structure was topography pattern. The three different landscape types (hills, gentle hill Pingba and low mountains) formed the northwest, central, southeast of different land use structure, type of arable land-land for woodland-orchard-waters, and water conservancy facilities for the overall portfolio of Yongchuan district. There was a postive correlation to between GDP per unit area of the township land and extent of land use. Demonstraion analysis shows that this quantitative method can provide some references for analyzing land use structure characteristics at county scale especially in similar regions.
