Research On Organization Mode And Farmers’Efficiency Of Silkworm Production In China

The activity of planting mulberry trees and feeding silkworms in our country has a history of more than5000years. China is the largest cocoon commodity producer and exporter in the world. Since the1990’s, the whole cocoon industry chain is very unstable because of the silkworm cocoon’s production and price ups and downs.This paper aims to figure out the most efficient sericulture organizational mode in our country with the DEA method. Firstly, we summarize four organizational models according to the form between farmer and sericulture organizations and analysis its characteristics from five dimensions. Then, we research on the efficiency of different organizational modes by questionnaire data. Finally, according to the analysis results, useful and appropriate policy has been suggested.By the overall production target analysis, when the area of planted mulberry is more than10acres, family-based feeding mode achieve efficiency frontier. The "Company-Farmers" mode has the highest efficiency when farmer use the land area from5to10acres. Moreover. the "Company+Intermediary organization+Fanners" mode’s highest efficiency appear in the situation that the farmer put more than5acres to crop mulberry."Company+base+farmers" mode play its technical efficiency when the mulberry area into larger. By the production target analysis,Empirical results are similar to the result of the analysis of the overall production target. However, the "company+intermediary organization+farmers" mode is more suitable for the farmer whose mulberry area is from6to10acres to produce.The empirical results show that:At the level of technical efficiency."Company+Farmers"mode is the best. and at the level of scale efficiency."Company+Intermediary organization+Farmers" mode is the best. Also, the most appropriate scale of silkworm production is6to10acres.
