Confronted with increasingly severe challenges of the new environmentcharacterized by economic globalization and demanding customers’ requirements, theenvironment where enterprises are running their business has changed a lot. Howenterprises optimize their purchasing management and improve their market powerand gain advantages in competition is a challenging issue that has been confrontingmanagement for years. SC, a large international enterprise, purchases most of thematerials and components from suppliers, aims to obtain timing services at reasonableprices and satisfied quality, and ensures streamlined operations and healthierdevelopment. However, its way of purchasing cannot meet the requirement of itsoperation and need to be improved.This thesis illustrates the fundamental concepts and theories of supply chainmanagement, analyzes the organizational structure, and improves processes ofpurchasing and supplier evaluation, with the focus on supply chain management andthe necessity of strategic collaborative relationships among the firm’s business unitsand with its strategic suppliers. Based on the purchasing practices in SC, the thesissystematically discusses the organizational structure of the purchasing function, andimproves the process of purchasing and systems for supplier evaluation andmanagement. This thesis utilizes the theory and practices identified from the literature,and combines the characteristics of SC’s global business relevant to purchasingmanagement. The result of this research will contribute to and guide the purchasingmanagement of SC. It will be a valuable reference to other companies as well.The creativeness of this thesis lies in the study of the determination and nurturingof strategic suppliers from the standpoint of strategic collaboration for solvingexisting specific problems, and the practical model that is developed in order tooptimize the purchasing management system in SC cooperation. Meanwhile, itprovides managerial implications for other integrated Japanese corporations.
