Each transport has its own scope of application, before the emergence of high-speed railway, the various modes of transport have established their own areas of strength, and basically formed a fixed pattern of transport. High-speed railway as a fast, safe, comfortable, low-power, and large volumes of new modes of transportation, we can say that it breaks that pattern to a certain extent, and a variety of modes of transportation are subject to more or less attack. High-speed rail in the short-haul markets to seize the road passenger traffic, and seize civil aviation traffic passenger in the long-haul markets, even aviation route are forced to stop along the High-speed rail line. All the signs seem to indicate that the all-powerful high-speed rail can play a huge superiority on each line, as an alternative to other modes of transportation. We must admit that the high-speed railway opened in China have achieved great success, but we must also see the nature of the success of high-speed railway. Currently opened high-speed railway lines are all the short-range high-speed railway, of which Beijing and Shanghai high-speed railway’s1318km as the longest one. High-speed railway can play its technical and economic superiority in the short to medium range routes, it is beyond doubt, whether the high-speed rail in the long line can still play its technical and economic superiority? Article is based on this issue, explore the competitiveness of high-speed rail in the different transport distance, as high-speed railway’s main competitors in the long line is civil air transport, so article based on the competition with the civil aviation studys the relationship between sharing rate and transport distance of high-speed railway, then gets the scope of application of high-speed rail.Paper first analysis the technical-economic characteristics of high-speed railway and civil aviation, nail down their respective competitive advantage, and analyze the various relationships existing between them; second describe the passenger travel process, and focusing on analysis a variety of influencing factors of passenger travel choice, then make a brief introduction of the passenger flow characteristics of the new era; next to determine the factors that affect passenger travel choice, and based on the generalized cost theory to quantify, get travelers to choose a certain mode of transport to travel generalized costs, using the logit model to calculate the market share rate of high-speed railway and civil aviation in different transport distance; through the analysis of the market share rate of high-speed rail in different transport distance to determine the dominate of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway transport distance, which travels at300km/h. finally propose recommendations about the development of high-speed railway and civil aviation in the future transportation pattern.
