In 1978 China started market-oriented economic reforms that paved the way for three buoyant decades during which the Gross Domestic Product went from$45 billion to$6 trillion, with an average year on year growth of 10%. In developed countries there is a general agreement that this great economic success is imputable to exports. But focusing on exports alone may conceal the real engine of growth:Foreign Direct Investment into the country. So as to further investigate this phenomenon, I first verify what brings an Italian SME to internationalize production by analyzing supply-side factors, demand-side factors and institutional factors. Successively I examine the strategies that are adopted in order to successfully operate in China. Finally I dedicate the most important and substantial part of the thesis to FAAM that has settled the production of high-quality industrial batteries in Yixing. In the conclusions I claim that the peculiarities of expanding in China are somewhat related to the rapidly changing economic, legislative and social context of China itself. As a consequence, national enterprises need to be resilient, flexible and rapid in grasping the opportunities that the host country has to offer.
