Social enterprise is a kind of business organization which engages to solve social problems. In the 1990s, welfare system in developed countries had become unsustainable, mainly due to their high welfare spending and oversized yet inefficient welfare department. Under such circumstances, social enterprises had emerged first in the developed nations, and subsequently stridden into the developing countries as an innovative way of meeting social needs. The purpose of this thesis is to explore how social enterprise in mainland of China to get sustainable development. This thesis provides a brief introduction to the development of contemporary social enterprises in modern society. It also describes the existing studies on social enterprises both in China and the overseas, the historical development, the current situation as well as various issues encountered by social enterprises. This thesis explains why the growth of social enterprises is inevitability, by exploring the values of and the needs for social enterprises. A case study analysis was carried out to examine the goals, operations and problems of a locally-owned social enterprise in Yunnan Province, before a proposal for management improvement is presented. In this thesis, various methodologies including material analytic method, surveys and field investigation, induction analysis are used to examine facts and to achieve more objective conclusions, which will be of good reference for all people connecting to or interested in studying social enterprises including the author.
