| Umbilical cord blood is blood that comes from newborns’umbilical cords. According to scientific researches, umbilical cord blood contains an extensive amount of hematopoietic stem cells which help to rebuild human hematopoietic and immune systems, and to treat some diseases by transplanting stem cells taken from umbilical cord blood into patients. 1988 saw the first successful transplantation of cord blood stem cells, then more and more cord blood banks have been set up worldwide. Due to cord blood stem cells’unique biological property, resource advantage, and wide range of adaptability, umbilical cord blood, together with bone marrow and peripheral blood, has become the key resources to acquire hematopoietic stem cells. With more and more in-depth study, the clinic practice technologies have being maturing, and the application range of cord blood stem cells has become wider and wider. With the sustainable development of national economy, the continuous progress in science and technology, and the rise in people’s living standard, cell therapy is leading to a new round of medical revolution, which offers an unprecedented opportunity to boom the cord blood industry in China.China started the study of cord blood stem cells in late 20th century, and both theoretical and clinic researches are still in infancy stages, and there are only a few institutions and companies working on it. Established in 1999, the company the author is working for is a professional institution that provides services of cord blood collecting, testing, processing, preserving, and stem cell therapy. During the past ten years, the company has become the largest bioengineering company in Western China, focusing on cord blood preservation and the relevant industry-chain business. As the managing director, the author has gained some experience and understandings from management and operation of the company. This thesis is a case study, which aims to analyze cord blood industry background, to find out approaches of implementing the company’s development strategy in hope of drawing a blueprint for the future development of the company, and of making some contribution to Chinese cord blood industry. Some management theories and tools are applied to analyze the company’s status quo and development path so as to find approaches of implementing development strategy, which is to build a public-list company having a yearly revenue over 100 million RMB, with scientific research and innovation as its core competitive strength.The thesis falls into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the background of the selected topic, the status quo of the company and the terms for cord blood industry, and the methods adopted, which draws out the importance and necessity of this research. The second chapter is a PEST analysis of the company. The third chapter talks about the feature and the trend of cord blood industry in China, and analyses the driving forces for this industry. The fourth chapter sets forth the development strategy of the company. The fifth chapter discourses the approaches of implementing the company’s development strategy in multiple levels like technology innovation, marketing, and company governance according to relevant management theories, and the results of SWOT analysis. This chapter is the key part to obtain the approaches of implementing company’s development strategy. The sixth chapter is a summary, which also shows the possible limitations of an individual research.With the globalization and development of biotechnology, this thesis works on the company’s five-year development strategy and its implementing approaches in an in-depth and systematic way according to the analysis of the cord blood industry and management theories. Taking the company’s actual conditions into account, and within the framework of modern management theories, the thesis serves as a decision-making reference to draw up management plans and operation objectives for the company’s management team. Serving as the basis on which to make business plans, the viewpoints and the conclusion of this thesis are of great guidance significance for the company’s future development. |
