Wireless sensor network is composed of many densely deployed low-cost sensor nodes with wireless communication capability. It can be applied to wiring and power supply difficulties regions, areas people do not reached and some temporary occasions. The wireless sensor network integrates sensor, computer and network technology. The purpose is sensing, collection and disposing the information which was produced by nodes in network coverage, then transmitted the information to the observers. Supported by eliminating the need for fixed network, and with fast start and strong survivability features, it can be widely applied in many areas such as military affaires, industry, transportation, environmental protection and other fields. Wireless sensor network is a new field of information technology, and it has very broad application prospects in the field of military and civilian. So it is considered to be one of the tremendous influence technologies in 21st century.Due to the performance of wireless sensor networks are mainly restricted to node’s low energy consumption, low computing capacity and storage capacity, as well as smaller transmission range. Therefore, the sensor network routing protocols must be carefully designed to extend survival time across the network. In recent years, grate achievements have been yielded in the wireless sensor network routing technology. Many protocols suitable for the characteristics of wireless sensor network routing protocols have been proposed, such as Directed Diffusion, LEACH, SPIN, TEEN, APTEEN, PEGASIS etc.In this paper, we summarized the characteristics, trends of application and network architecture of WSN, and also about the key technologies during current research works of the wireless sensor network. Aiming at the limitation of protocol stacks, we added the time synchronization functional localization functional sub-layer, and also added QoS, energy, security, topology, and many other mechanisms. Then we analyzed the existing wireless sensor network routing protocols. These protocols have been classified, and compared from the relevant indicators. Then we made the improvement. Time awareness, which uses session history as one of route selection criteria, been added to the MAODV. The TMAODV has a better performance on the PDR (Processing Data Rate) and latency than MAODV through the simulation with NS2. Then the performance of TMAODV gives the less control overhead in the network when compared to the MAODV.
