Nowadays, with the demand for high-speed and reliable transmitting information, the communication industry develops rapidly. As the backbone of the transmission network, the requirements of Optical fiber communications are increasing deeply. It needs high capacity, high reliability and validity, and fast cross configuration. As the development of ASON and the WSON, the management of the optic fiber network becomes more and more intelligent, transparent and efficient. The highly complexity optical fiber network is becoming more common, and the nodes of the network are increasing. So it requires us become master to cross configuration, which requires that we have the appropriate technology to ensure the correctness of the configuration.The wavelength tracking technology came into being to match the requirements above. We can use the technology to track the optical signal in the optical layer, so we also can clear that the detective of the intelligent control plane (NMS) is performed correctly or not at the ROADM nodes. This paper improves the original wavelength tracking technology, and puts forward a technology called the signal-top modulation. It can be used to realize the wavelength tracking technology. It is realized by modulating a low frequency signal on the top of the high frequency optical signal. The modulated signal-top contains the wavelength information and the address information, so we can receive and parse such information, to find the fault of the network configuration and then fix it.The purpose of this paper is to introduce using the modulation of the signal top to realize the wavelength tracking technology. It mainly completes the following work:1. Introducing the way of using the modulation of the signal top to realize the wavelength tracking technology.2. Describing the method of realizing the prototype which uses the modulation of the signal top.3. Structuring the simulation platform of the modulated signal top system.4. Analyzing the effect of the modulation of the signal top in10G,40G and100G transmission system.
