In optical fiber communication systems, in order to meet the requirements of the WDM system, integrated optical devices have become the trend in the development of future. Micro-ring resonator structure is very conducive for large-scale planar photonic integration due to its compact structure. Meanwhile, the micro-ring resonator has good wavelength selectivity due to its good resonant characteristics.In this paper, we have investigated the theory of the micro-ring resonator and the main achievements are summarized as follows:1. We have investigated the basic theory of the micro-ring resonator and used the transfer matrix method and coupled mode theory to calculate the transfer function of the series micro-ring resonator.2. We proposed an asymmetric approach to design high-order micro-ring filters, the aim is to achieve at-top and steep-side response and adequate suppression of the spurious interstitial mode. Our simulation results showed an extended FSR of40nm, reducing the interstitial peak suppression from-5dB to-35dB and a boxlike filter response with sharp factor (SF) is0.68is achieved, its characteristics are very suitable for DWDM system.3. A new micro-ring photo-detector consists of three series-cascaded micro-ring resonator was proposed. The first two micro-ring resonator are filter, the last micro-ring resonator finishes the absorption of optical signals. This structure takes advantage of the characteristics of the micro-ring resonator, it simultaneously obtains good wavelength selectivity and high quantum efficiency. The maximum quantum efficiency obtained by the simulation is98%and high-speed performance achieved42GHz.4. We summarized fundamental principles of the fabrication of photonic micro-resonators, including the sources of loss in micro-ring resonator, the advantages and disadvantages of the main material systems of micro-ring resonator, the key processing technology of micro-ring resonator. SOI strcture has high refractive index contrast and large mode confinement which can reduce loss of micro-resonators.5. A parallel micro-ring filter was designed and the device fabricated. We finished the build of experimental platform. The device has been tested by our own platform. The experimental results and the theoretical results obtained are very similar, which proves the correctness of the theoretical design.
