In order to further meet the requirements of seamless coverage, higher data rate for wireless users,3GPP is working on the standardization of LTE-Advanced system and its evolving system. The main requirements of system design are focusing on providing higher data rates, higher spectrum and power effectiveness as well as enhancing the performance of overall networks and edge users. By changing network topology of conventional macro cellular, heterogeneous network technology which focuses on improving the spectrum effectiveness per unit area, was proposed by LTE-Advanced standardization organization and considered as one of the key technologies in LTE-Advanced system.Heterogeneous networks are a hybrid network which contain many different types of base stations including macro cellulars and remote wireless nodes, low power nodes (such as pico, femto, relay). It can shorten the transmission distance of a radio signal between the transmitter and receiver so that significantly enhance the spectrum effectiveness and achieve higher data transmission rate. However, As a result of the increasing of interference sources, the interference scenarios become more complicated and the problems caused by interference become more severe. Therefore we need to further research on enhanced inter-cell interference coordination technologies which are efficient to tackle the interference problems.In this paper, we mainly pay attention to the key inter-cell interference coordination technologies which are discussing in the standardization of LTE-Advanced system. At first, we introduce heterogeneous networks and its problems caused by inter-cell interference. Then we give a summarization of main inter-cell interference coordination technologies which are suitable for different heterogeneous network scenarios in three aspects including time domain, frequency domain and power control. In the end, we evaluate influence of time domain, frequency domain and power control technical proposals on system performance on the basis of system level simulation platform.With the simulation results under different heterogeneous network scenarios and inter-cell interference coordination schemes, we give a summarization of different inter-cell interference coordination schemes and its suitable heterogeneous network scenarios, configuration parameters, and so on. The results of this paper can provide necessary technical support to the standardization of inter-cell interference coordination schemes under heterogeneous networks in the LTE-Advanced system. It’s also meaningful to operators on actual network.
