Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a non-contact automatic identification technology. It uses electromagnetic waves to indentify the target and realize bi-directional communication. RFID has much more advantages over other identification technologies, and this leads to the continuous development in recent years and applications in fields like transportation, logistics management, healthcare, anti-fake, etc. RFID systems usually consist of RFID tags, readers and computer data processing systems. With the rapid development of RFID, the tag price has become the key factor of restricting RFID applications, especially in low-end products. As a primary component, tag antenna has always been the focus for researchers. Study on how to design low-cost and high-performance tag antennas that can be applied to practical occasions will bring theory and application values to RFID development. This paper concentrated on the design of low-cost UHF tag antennas. And the main problem faced during the design process was the effect caused by metal background. Based on the analysis of the effect on tag antennas caused by metal background, this paper accomplished two anti-metal tag antennas, one applied inside cigarette cases and the other applied on license plates, to satisfy the low-cost applications. The main work of this paper is divided into two parts. The first part proposed an anti-metal tag antenna used in cigarette cases based on low-cost antenna manufacturing technology called hot stamping. The principal focus was on design of bow-tie dipole antenna. The reading distance of the final tag samples can achieve5cm, which proves the practicability of the proposal. The second part proposed an anti-metal tag antenna used on license plates. The principal focus was on design of asymmetric feeding microstrip antenna. After discussing the performance changes in accordance to feeding positions and matching branches, methods of broadening the bandwidth was proposed.
