Optical layer is one of the core layers of present communication network, which relies on optical network equipment to provide large-capacity and high-rate data transmission. Driven by soaring service requirements, the data carried by the communication network are keeping growing. This situation leads to rapid growth on optical network scale, and makes optical network management more and more complicated. Meanwhile, the problem of optical network energy consumption has become increasingly serious. Therefore, in order to improve the efficiency of optical network management and reduce the energy consumption, efforts are made on the research and development of low-power-consumption and high-efficiency optical network management system.Embedded systems, being efficient and energy-saving, have been widely used in the field of network management. They are usually deployed on network elements to monitor and configure them. However, in a long period of time, embedded systems are merely used as management agents subject to their limited processing capacity and resources. Nowadays, with the rapid development of computer science and chip-manufacturing technology, the processing capacity of embedded systems is continually improving, and even catches up with that of some desktops. Therefore, more network management functions can be implemented in embedded systems.USB Mass Storage devices usually have a short development cycle and are simple to use, so they have been widely used in the field of portable storage and financial security products.On one hand, this paper relies on ROADM (Reconfigurable Optical Add/drop Multiplexer) equipment used in optical network to make studies on the embedded network management system; on the other hand, this paper also studies USB Mass Storage devices depending on the USB development platform. Below are the main contents and main innovative points of this paper.1. A full-featured embedded network management system is proposed, combining the architecture of present network management systems and the recent trends of developing low-power-consumption and high-efficiency network management system. Firstly, this newly proposed embedded network management system can still be used as a management agent; secondly, it will provide independent network management functions to directly monitor and configure the managed equipment.2. The design and implementation of the embedded network management system are studied based on ARM and Embedded Linux, which involved the use of SNMP protocol, several advanced Linux programming techniques and several open-source software packages.3. The power consumption of the newly proposed embedded network management system is analyzed, and a set of approaches to reduce power consumption is proposed.4. A virtual USB CD-ROM device with Compact Disc File System (CDFS) is studied. Detailed implementation of USB enumeration, Mass Storage Bulk-Only transmission and virtual Compact Disc File System (CDFS) are presented, which has a good practical value.
