In the optical communication system, passive components play an very important role, and the fiber optic splitter has been widely used in optical fiber LAN, optical fiber CATV and optical fiber sensor systems. At present, the fiber optic splitter has formed a series of multi-functional and purpose products. The demand of fused bi-conical taper splitter has taken the second place in the optical communication network because of its low excess loss, good direction, fine environmental stability, low cost and many other advantages. Improve the production performance not only can make the merchants to win in the competition, also has very vital significance to the development of optical fiber communication. In this paper, the first chapter introduces the BeamPROP software, its functions, operations and characteristics are introduced in detail, expounds the beam propagation method that is used to analyze the optical devices. The second chapter firstly introduces two kinds of optical splitter and compares their advantage and defect respectively, and then the preparation technology of them are presented in detail, and finally enumerates several performance parameters associated with the divider, emphatically introduces the polarization dependent loss (PDL).The third chapter firstly introduces fused taper structure, and then in the existing way of molten zone model, on the basis of the existing model and according to the practical cross-sectional view, this paper proposes a new model of the melting area. The fourth chapter firstly introduces the birefringence effect and its connection with PDL, then simulates the FBT splitter using the BeamPROP, the relationship between PDL and coupling ratio(D) under different pulling-length is gained, finds out the value of D corresponding the zero PDL point, and gives the distribution of these point D.The last chapter firstly gets the relationship between PDL, pulling-length and D under different splitting ratio through the simulation and calculation, compares the simulation and experimental results, and the causes for the difference between them were analyzed, and finally plans the next step of work.
