The two international standard organizations, namely ISO Moving Pictures Experts Group and ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group, had been made their efford to specify and improve the next-generation video coding standard called High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) since January,2010. The H.265/HEVC which still used spatial pixels to predict intra frame obviously adds some excellent algotirhms and performed better than the H.264/AVC:64X64Coding Unit Tree Structure,33dirctional intra mode and2intra modes (DC and Planar) for smooth area, Chroma intra mode derived from luma mode, DST for transform process.Intra prediction utilizes the original frame and the predicted frame from the spatial neighboring pixels to obtain bitstream after transformation and quantization. Including to some efficient algorithm step by step, the intra prediction in H.265/HEVC achieve better preformance than H.264/AVC. Therefore, there’re rooms to further optimize the intra prediction in H.265/HEVC hybrid video coding framework. In this paper, we analyze the relation between a block’s texture characteristics and its best coding mode. Based on the analysis, we further develop an adaptive strategy for fast mode decision in intra coding for HEVC. Experimental results show significant computational saving in All-Intra High Efficiency and All-Intra Low Complexity test conditions compared to the default HM-4.0with an ignorable BD-rate increase. Nevertheless, the fast decision worked in the3D video coding based on H.265/HEVC is also to reduce significant computational complexity for Wedgelet Partitioning. Based on the way of obtaining the picture texture from the mode with Sum of Absolute Transform Difference in rough mode decision, we propose a fast scheme to determine Wedgelet Partition in intra prediction, which leads to significant computational saving with marginal BD-rate increase after decoder-side view synthesis.
