Wireless nodes typically operate with small batteries for which replacement, when possible, isvery diffcult and expensive. Thus, in many scenarios, the wireless nodes must operate withoutbatteries replacement for many years. Consequently, minimizing the energy consumption is a veryimportant design consideration and energy-effcient transmission schemes must be used for the datatransfer in sensor networks. As the primary energy consumption of wireless nodes is used to receive and send data. Thus, take some measures to reduce the energy consumption during sending and receiving plays a vitalrole in reducing the enengy consumption of the whole network. Reaserch have shown that for thesame throughput requirement, MIMO systems require less transmission energy than SISO systems. However, direct application of multiantenna techniques to sensor networks is impractical due to thelimited physical size of a sensor node which typically can only support a single antenna. Fortunately,if we allow individual single-antenna nodes to cooperate on information transmission and/orreception, a cooperative MIMO system can be constructed such that energy-efficient MIMOschemes can be deployedAs a research background, we study the fundamental of the cooperative communicationtechniques in wireless sensor network (ie.virtual MIMO technology) first, and then compare theperformance of the cooperative communication scheme and the traditional scheme. The simulationresults shows, the energy-efficiency of cooperstive scheme is higher. We combined with cooperativecommunication technology and multi-hop technology, proposed a new multi-hop transmissionmodel, which not only increase the transmission distance, and have been proved has a higherenergy-efficiency in both fixed-rate and variable-rate systems.Increase the transmission distance and improve the energy-efficiency of the whole network arethe two features of our model. Finally, this paper summarizes the the fundamental of thecooperative communication techniques. Demonstrates the advantages and defects of the multi-hoptransmission model, and makes some prospects of the future work.
