Frequency selective surface (FSS) has the frequency selective properties. It plays an important role in electromagnetic stealth, electromagnetic compatibility, military telecommunication, electromagnetic counterwork, etc. The importance of the Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) is realized by more and more countries. The two main applications of the FSS are stealth radomes like band-pass filter and electromagnetic absorbers used for absorbing electromagnetic wave.Theoretical research and application of the FSS are discussed in the paper.On the aspect of theoretical research, mode matching method are used to analyse the transmission performance of FSS. The Physical explanation and the designing process of FSS are given. Frequency characteristic of Floquet modes and some phenomenon including grating lobe, abnormal wood, surface wave are investigated.In the application of innovation, discussed the double screen and tri-screen frequency selective surface design method, especially on how to achieve broadband, high transmittance, big incident angle, steep cutoff properties, undertook thorough analysis and exploration. Innovative design of hexagon ring unit and improvement of type Y unit two broadband unit, achieving a40%bandwidth, obtained remarkable result.The existing literature on single frequency selective surfaces have been extensively studied, according to the need of practical application, focusing on the tri-screen frequency selective surface performance, tri-screen FSS has better broadband and wide angle performance, although the design is more complex, but can be optimized by big margin, more conducive to the realization of desired frequency performance. The high index tri-screen frequency selective surface optimization design, designed to meet the requirements of airborne environment high strength tri-screen frequency selective surface.Tri-screen FSS have lot of variables.Analysis of error when planar FSS was manufactured and applied. The result has practical value in FSS application.
