In recent years, with the rapid growth of low light level imaging technology, to obtain the high quality target images has become the main purpose for low light level imaging system, which needs to have photoelectric imaging devices with higher detection sensitivity and higher signal to noise ratio. As a newfashioned low light level imaging devices, EMCCD has an additional multiplication register different from traditional CCD. With the characteristics of high sensitivity, high signal to noise ratio, high dynamic range, all solid-state structure and the capability of single photon detecting, EMCCD has enormous potential and application prospect in the field of low light level imaging. This paper is mainly about researches on the fundamental nature of EMCCD and its application in photon counting imaging. Firstly, we introduce the structure and operating principle of EMCCD. The main property parameters of EMCCD are discussed in detail, including multiplication noise, conversion gain, multiplication gain, clock induced charge and dark current, etc. Afterwards, a simple mathematical model of the distribution of output electrons based on EMCCD was developed for the multiplication register and then simulated it. The signal to noise ratio theoretical models of EMCCD is analyzed. These lay the foundation for the study of photon counting imaging method and provide a reliable standard of parameters.According to statistical optics theory, an imaging simulation model based on EMCCD are developed, and simulate the imaging process of photon counting imaging. On the principle of theoretical research and simulation model, the photon counting imaging experimental platform based on EMCCD is designed and setup. Imaging is performed to detect the target under the low light level conditions, we get the better photon counting images using multi-frame accumulation and normalization processing. At the same time, the influence of those experimental conditions parameters on the imaging quality of photon counting imaging is studied. The experimental results show that the method of photon counting imaging based on EMCCD is useful for the low light level imaging to increase detection sensitivity and signal to noise ratio.
