With the rapid development of wireless communications and network technology, more and more wireless access technology have been emerging around our lives, each wireless access technology has different advantages in terms of capacity, coverage, data rate and so on. Therefore, how to find an appropriate network which can not only meet the users’ needs but also take full advantage of the limited resources of various wireless networks is worth researching, which is called ’network selection in heterogeneous wireless networks. On the other hand, random network coding can reduce the number of retransmissions and improve the bandwidth efficiency of wireless broadcasting. Combining the network selection with random network coding can take the advantages of both and provide faster and more reliable network services. For the single user network selection in heterogeneous wireless networks, we define the system model at first, after that we propose a network selection policy based on random network coding in broadcast environment. Then we compare our proposed policy with a network selection policy based on XOR network coding and a policy without network coding technology. The simulation results verify the high performance of our proposed policy. For the group network selection in heterogeneous wireless networks, we propose a network selection policy based on improved random network coding strategy in broadcast environment. Then we introduce a random network coding retransmission algorithms which is based on vandermonde matrix, which can help reduce the overhead in packets. Then we compare our proposed policy with a network selection policy based on XOR network coding and a policy without network coding technology. The simulation results show that our proposed policy has better performance.
