Cognitive radio system is an intelligent wireless communication system. Throughanalysis of surrounding environment frequency spectrum utilization, it can change thesystem’s working parameters to improve the spectrum access opportunity of cognitiveusers. This technology can greatly improve the frequency spectrum utilization rate, andalleviate the increasingly tense of spectrum utilization. In this paper, the spectrumsensing technique of cognitive radio and its software and hardware implementation aremainly discussed. The spectrum data compression function is also realized.First, the cognitive radio background, development status, and the prospect of itsapplication are introduced. Second, the cognitive radio spectrum sensing technique isintroduced. Some algorithms of energy spectrum sensing are also discussed. Third, therealization of spectrum sensing technology in FPGA is introduced in detail, and the FFThardware implementation process and the correctness of its results are emphaticallydiscussed. Finally, three methods of lossless data compression are expounded, and thenthe implementation process of LZ77compression algorithm in FPGA and the analysisof its performance are emphatically elaborated.In order to realize the spectrum sensing and spectrum data compression, someimportant parts should be implemented in the FPGA, including system required clockgeneration, FFT hardware implementation, data buffer design, data compression module,FPGA and DSP communication interface implementation.This design is build on Virtex-5XC5VSX35T FPGA of the Xilinx Corp usingVerilog HDL.
