With the advancement of technology as well as the special demands for energy transfers in critical occasions, increasing attentions are paid to non-contact power transfer technology. Non-radiative resonant strongly coupled non-contact power transfer technology, which is called WiTricity, appeared in2007, and is considered to be the most promising wireless energy transfer technology. Since the frequency of electrical signal used in this technique is around10MHz, as the power output of the source, the RF power amplifier plays an essential role in the contactless power transfer. Also, the matching of the power amplifier and the power transmission coil will be another important issue affecting the power transfer efficiency. To conclude, the analysis and design of the power amplifier is the important part in WiTricity.This paper first introduces the RF theory including transmission line theory, scattering parameters and impedance matching. Then it details the performances of the RF power amplifier and the amplifier classification. Under the demand for no-contact energy transfer research, with reference to the RF theory, develops the design objectives and design specifications. Firstly, simulates each circuit part of the power amplifier using ADS software in accordance with the design process, and then simulates the whole circuit of the power amplifier. Subsequently, the design of the amplifier PCB layout is obtained in order to obtain better simulation results. Integrated simulation is finally conducted to get more realistic simulation results.Based on the previous work, a prototype amplifier is assembled and tested. The tested performances of the power amplifier are reported as:within a2-20MHz frequency band, the power amplifier output power is greater than50W, the efficiency is higher than40%, the gain is no less than23dB, and the gain flatness of1dB standard is met, for the fabricated RF power amplifier.
