As a new generation of information technology, the Internet of Things is leading to a newtechnological revolution and an industrial revolution, which is an opportunity of development forevery country in the world. Therefore, it can provide the credible competitive intelligence fordecision-makers, such as the government and corporates, by studying the development of patents inthe field of the internet of things, in specially analyzing core key technology patents, patentinventors cooperation, research focus and technology evolution path, which is helpful for focusingresources on key technologies, achieving technological innovation upgrading and industrialgreat-leap-forward development. By taking consider of the particularity of the problems, usemapping knowledge method to solve several key problems in the field of the Internet of Things asfollows:1. Study on the technology system of the IOT. Its technology chain presents a multi-core startopology structure, consisting of the perception layer, the transport layer, the intelligent computinglayer and the collaborative control. One key technology of each layer is selected as the object ofstudy, namely RFID, NFC, cloud computing and intelligent control.2. Build knowledge mappings of key technologies of the IOT. The.patent data are downloadedand processed form the Derwent database, then conversed by a program and imported into theCiteSpace. With the help of visualization software, key patents are presented from the knowledgemappings of patent co-citation network by the frequency or the centrality.3. Build knowledge mappings of exploring scholars collaboration (co-authorship) network. The patented invention cooperation matrixes are built by the use of co-occurrence analysis, theinventor cooperation network maps of the four technologies are drawn with the help of Bibexceland Ucinet. The structure of network is studied by the use of relevant indicators of social networkanalysis from the view of the overall pattern of research collaborations, and a particularcore–periphery structure is observed in this study, which means core technologies are often heldby a small group of experts."Structural holes" in the network suggest that there are existing"bridges", thereby playing a facilitating role in research collaborations. By using the networkdensity and distance measurement, the overall exploring scholars collaboration (co-authorship)network is generally loose. The key inventors in the center position are identified by Freeman scentrality theory, namely they are the most popular in whole network or who stand at the center of the attention. The notion of a clique formally depicts some cohesive subgroups within a network. With k-cores analysis, this research also finds that clusters will be more and the network structurewill be more complex as the scale of the network is bigger.3. Study on the technology front and evolution trend of the key technolggies. Research frontmaps of the key technologies of the Internet of Things are built, and technological fronts and theevolution of trends are detected. This study finds that the four key techniques involve differentdisciplines with some generic technology. Accordingly, it is known that the technology frontiers ofthe internet of things exist in computer peripheral equipment technology, computer technology, signal telemetry remote control class technology, mobile phone and data transmission systemtechnology and so on. In conclusion, the trends, the evolution laws and subject areas of the fourtechnologies are different, but all gradually turning from theoretical study and to practicalapplication in life. Finally, combined with research findings, policy suggestions are put forward to conducive tothe protection of intellectual property rights, the technological innovation and industrial integrationfrom the perspective of technology diffusion and knowledge sharing.
