In recent years, with the development of the multi-sensor information fusion technology, the image fusion of infrared and low-level light images has become a research hotspot, especially in the field of night vision image. Thermal infrared images reflect the distribution of radiation by the target scene. Infrared image has high contrast, is hardly influenced by the environment, and can’t depict the details of image clearly. Light level image has high resolution while the image is easily influenced by the environment. People fuse the complementary information between infrared and low-level light images, the fused image has more useful information, and is more suitable for subsequent image processing. This thesis mostly focuses on the research of the low-level-light and infrared image fusion system basing on FPGA. Starting from the basic theory, the thesis reviews the development of image fusion at home and abroad, and analyze the source and contrasts the characteristics of infrared images and low-light-level images, as well as the necessary of image fusion. It also summarizes the process of image fusion, uses image enhancement and image registration based on simple affine transformation model in pre-processing, and selects weighted median pyramid decomposition algorithm in image fusion. This thesis designs an image fusion system which bases on FPGA with infrared and low-light-level images, and briefly introduces some modules of the hardware part in the system. Lastly, this thesis finished some simulation tests for image denoising, enhancement, registration and fusion, and had an objective analysis about the test results.
