The present PDA study products mostly have sole function, poor scalability, and high cost. These disadvantages limit the applications of the products to some extent. In view of this situation, this research aims to study and develop a PDA learning product with low cost, high performance and scalability.The design of the product is based on open source technology, it take s GNU/Linux as the core operating system, and it supports the POSIX standard application programming interface. The design uses QT/QTOPIA as the system’s graphical user interface components and framework, which supports a large number of QT/QTOPIA PDA applications. SQLite and Berkeley DB based open source database technology is applied in data storage and access platform, thus the product supports the millions of high speed retrieval, sentence retrieval.On the hardware side, the SAMSUNG’s S3C2410A is utilized as the main chip, CS42L51of CSS is applied as audio CODEC, they provide basic hardware foundation for upper software. The design applies NAND FLASH as the program and data storage, and it utilizes an external MMC/SD memory card as the extended memory, thus the cost and the power consumption of the product could be reduced.The application of this system enables PDA products to have multi-function of learning, communication, media playing, and personal digital assistance. It effectively controls the cost of the product, therefore making the product considerably competitive. This paper focuses on the analysis of design concept, the use of design patterns, file system and data storage structure selection of some applications such as Dictionary, Examination King, Wordtutor.This paper aims to realize multimedia assisted learning PDA product which directly faces the education market. If the cost is acceptable, it is able to support MP3MPEG4audio, video, visual repetition, audio-visual learning and other multimedia features. It achieves data sharing and transferring with Windows PC. Moreover, it could support electronic dictionary, personal information management and game function.
